What is Upper Cervical Care?
Upper Cervical Care is a method of chiropractic care focusing on identifying and correcting misalignments in the upper portion of the neck. The primary segments of the spine that this type of care focuses on are C1 (atlas), C2 (axis), and C3.
Why the Upper Neck?
The bones of the upper neck are designed to protect and support the brain stem and spinal cord. These two structures are vital to one’s overall function and well-being. The spinal cord is the body’s communication network transmitting all information from the brain to the body and vice versa. The spinal cord originates at the base of the brain stem where millions upon millions of microscopic nerve fibers branch off the brain and out to the body. The brain stem also has several important responsibilities including the regulation of basic bodily functions such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, sleep cycle, and muscle tone. Another critical function of the brain stem is to process sensory information regarding the movements and positioning of the body and its limbs in space.
Misalignments in this area of the neck place the greatest strain on the nervous system because of the structures these segments protect. Misalignments in the upper neck alter the normal flow of information to and from the brain stem and spinal cord forcing the body to compensate in order optimize its overall well-being. Overtime these compensations begin to build and eventually lead to pain, dysfunction, and more severe complications.
